To move forward with confidence in your play therapy practice, it helps to understand where the work began. This workshop invites participants on a guided journey through the evolution of play therapy from its early roots to more contemporary applications used today. Participants will explore the historical foundations of play therapy, including key contributors and the development of major approaches such as Child-Centered Play Therapy, Theraplay®, and other seminal theories that continue to shape clinical practice. By grounding modern interventions in historical context, clinicians can deepen their understanding, strengthen clinical decision-making, and feel more connected to the heart of play therapy work.
Objectives:
Identify key historical milestones and influential figures in the development of play therapy.
Describe the foundational principles of major play therapy approaches, including Child-Centered Play Therapy and Theraplay®, and how they emerged over time.
Explain how historical play therapy theories inform and influence modern play therapy practice.
