The school environment provides an opportunity for many children to access therapeutic mental health support, however, this setting presents its own challenges for school-based clinicians. In this workshop we will examine the history of play-based mental health interventions in school and the impact school based therapy has on decreasing societal stigma surrounding mental health. This training will help you learn how to present play therapy goals and effectiveness to administrators and staff to increase buy in. We discuss strategies and effective methods of partnering with school faculty, staff, and caregivers to support students. You will leave this training with skill and confidence to use play based approaches in school knowledge and play therapy


Objectives

  • Analyze history of play-based mental health interventions in school settings.

  • Explain the benefits of play therapy in schools to stakeholders.

  • Demonstrate the ability to create play therapy goals applicable to academic settings.

  • Discuss 3-5 effective play therapy interventions for transitioning students to/from therapy.

  • Demonstrate 2-4 play-based interventions for the school setting.

  • Discuss play based strategies for partnering with caregivers in the school setting.
