Children with attachment disruptions due to foster care or adoption have relationship wounds that need to be acknowledged and addressed. This training is for mental health professionals working with foster and adoptive youth. Play therapy is an effective way to meet the unique needs of this group and help children begin to heal. This training will cover the core issues of adoption and permanency and ways you can meet them through thoughtful assessment, case conceptualization and treatment. We will explore play based assessments to help with treatment planning for  This workshop  will also cover helpful play therapy interventions for adopted or foster children including Theraplay, child centered play therapy, filial therapy  and other play based approaches to enhance your work as clinicians with this population. 


Objectives

  • Analyze the role of the core issues of adoption in play therapy treatment.

  • Discuss play-based assessments for adoptive and foster youth

  • Apply Theraplay interventions to use in family play therapy sessions

  • Describe the application of the Therapeutic Powers of Play in play therapy sessions with adopted and foster youth

  • Discuss the use of Child-Centered Play Therapy with adoptive and foster youth

  • Assess the use of Narrative play therapy in family play therapy sessions
