Description:

Telemental health has grown exponentially since the COVID-19 pandemic, and play therapists continue to hold a wide range of perspectives about its use with children. Some clinicians express concern about reduced connection or limited play materials, while others recognize teleplay therapy as a powerful tool for increasing access to play therapy services and maintaining continuity of care.

This introductory workshop explores how play therapy can be ethically, intentionally, and effectively adapted to a telehealth format. Participants will learn how to deliver teleplay therapy using both non-directive play therapy approaches (including Child-Centered Play Therapy principles) and Adlerian play therapy principles, while maintaining the core values of the powers of play.

Through discussion, examples, and practical strategies, clinicians will explore how to support children’s expression, connection, and therapeutic goals in the virtual playroom. This training is ideal for play therapists who want to incorporate teleplay therapy into their practice, strengthen their confidence in virtual play therapy sessions, or have an evidence-informed option available for snow days, illness, or accessibility needs.

Objectives

  • Analyze appropriate uses for teleplay therapy.

  • Demonstrate understanding of ethical considerations as it relates to teleplay therapy with children.

  • Identify at least 3 teleplay therapy interventions to implement in their practice.
